Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug
Are you a home cook who enjoys the flexibility of gas cooktops but requires an oven to bake in? Find a dual fuel cooker that offers the best of both worlds.
Many home chefs with experience prefer gas cooktops for their superior temperature control and capacity to use advanced cooking techniques such as charcoaling. These powerhouse stoves can be costly though, especially in the event that you require an additional gas connection and electrician for installation.
What is a 13amp plug?
If you own a dual fuel range cooker (also known as an electric and gas oven) then you'll require an appropriate 13 amp plug. The plug will also have to be hard-wired into the cooker circuit using a qualified electrician.
This ensures that the current flowing through the plug is safe and not too high which could create an electrical fire hazard. The current is controlled by a fuse inside the plug. The fuse will blow as soon as it is overloaded. This protects the appliance from an overload of electricity.
The fuse is classified at 13 amps, as shown on the top of the plug. this is the maximum amount of current that the plug can carry without causing damage to the appliance or overheating the socket. When replacing fuses, it is essential to use the same amperage rating as the original. If you replace the fuse with one of an alternative rating, you run the risk of overheating the socket, and potentially placing yourself and others at serious risk.
A 13 amp fuse will be a ceramic one, which is very robust and able to withstand the extreme temperatures generated by a range cooker. The ceramic element is also fire-proof, which makes it a more suitable choice over other kinds of fuse.
There are several ways to install a 13 amp plug. The plug can be connected to a live socket with screws or a plastic jaw cord clamp. The clamp must be tightened after the plug has been securely pushed into position.
Before connecting the wires you may need to remove the cardboard wiring diagram that is placed over the pins of certain plugs. It is essential that the wires are trimmed to the proper length since cutting them too long could cause them to break when the plug cover is replaced. The earth wire should be the longest in order to connect it before the line and neutral pins.
How do I install the 13amp plug?
The majority of dual fuel range cookers in the UK are connected to an outlet with a 13 amp rating and this is crucial because ovens draw a significant amount of current, and the standard plug sockets are rated at 10 amps.
In general new appliances should be fitted with a plug at the point-of-sale. This is to ensure compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. Older appliances might not have a plug and this could be the reason for the issue.
The first step to take when connecting a cooker with an existing plug socket is to check that the fuse rating of the fuse box matches that of the plug. This is crucial because an incorrectly-sized fuse can be dangerous.
It is also recommended that the fuse has been completely seated into the cartridge, and there is no excessive movement. The next step is to prepare the flex that will be used. Remove the sheathing from the flex in order to expose the three insulated conductors within. Then, nick the sheathing at the entry point to the plug (beyond the cord grip) using a knife, without piercing the individual insulated conductors. This nick should be wide enough to allow the sheathing to split and expand the nick when it is pulled back revealing the cable beneath. Finally, cut off the excess sheathing leaving about 40mm extending beyond the flexing end.
The flex is placed over the plug with the earth terminal on top and the neutral and live terminals at the bottom. Using the coloured conductors to guide you to the right direction, the sheathing should be removed from each pin and the internal cable is then plugged into the appropriate terminal using the cord grip. If the plug is fitted with a screw type cord clamp loosen it and pull back the insulation to reveal the copper conductors. Connect each insulated wire to the appropriate terminal by using the channel inside the plug. Start with the earth conductor first, then the neutral and finally the live.

What is the maximum draw of a 13 amp plug?
The maximum current draw for 13amp plugs at 300 volts is 3kw. This is a lot of power, but the standard fuse in a UK plugtop won't fail until the cable reaches a dangerous temperature. A damaged plug or socket may cause fire, therefore it is important to be vigilant about the amount of power you use particularly in the kitchen.
The ceramic fuses used in plugtops are approximately 25mm in diameter and are designed for mains voltages of 240V. The fuses will have the BS Kitemark or similar mark on the side and they'll contain sand. Glass or plastic alternatives are available, but should never be used in conjunction with a live plug.
The majority of dual fuel range cookers sold in the UK require a hard-wired connection and cannot be plugged directly into the wall socket. They are usually connected to a specific cooker ring circuit that is suitable for appliances that consume up to 20 amps.
Check the ring circuit of your home by using the fuse box, or ask an electrician in your area. They should be able to tell you if the sockets within your home are connected to the same ring or are separate and whether there is a dedicated circuit for your oven.

What is the maximum current draw of a cooker switch?
There is plenty of confusion over what the maximum current draw of a cooker's switch is. The truth is that most cookers aren't made to plug into the standard socket, but rather are hard wired and connected to a specific oven ring circuit. This is due to the fact that they often draw more than 20 amps of power when the gas and electric ovens are in use.
So, you won't find a dual fuel range cooker that could be connected to a standard socket, as it could pose a significant fire risk and be against electrical safety regulations. A professional electrician will always install any new electrical components to the kitchen cooker and ensure that the load (both the hob and oven) do not exceed the power capacity of the circuit.
Dual fuel range cookers mix the ability to cook with the sensitivity of a gas stove with the precision and accuracy of an electric oven. This is the reason they are popular among chefs and home cooks alike. If you are looking to experiment with various cooking techniques like searing and charcoaling, a dual fuel range cooker is the best choice.
When purchasing a new range cook, you should be aware of a number of aspects that include size, performance, and price. You will also need a gas connection in your home to connect the appliance. If you're not sure, it is best to make an appointment with a Gas Safe engineer to inspect your property before installation.
Currys' dual fuel range cookers come in a range of models to suit all budgets. From affordable models by Indesit and Zanussi to our own Essentials collection. If you are seeking something more sophisticated We have a range of premium JennAir models, that come with many new features.
If you are buying a brand new dual fuel range cooker, it's important to check the manual of the owner for specific details on the gas and electrical requirements. It is essential to ensure that your home has a suitable gas hook-up, and you may need to hire a plumber to install this for you, if needed. Based on the type of home you live in you'll also need to ensure that you have a dedicated cooker ring circuit that is installed and approved by a licensed electrician.
